 Anatomy of a smile

Language of a smile

It takes 17 muscles to smile, while it takes 43 to frown. The fascinating thing is that everyone smiles in the language.  And a smile is capable of expressing itself in several ways on different occasions.

There is an innocent and shy smile of bride-to-be; a smile of recognition; a kind of smile when you are being praised and a totally different one when you are being flattered.  There is sarcastic smile or a smile that confronts and throws a challenge at you. There are two types of nervous smiles; one, when you are caught returning home drunk to face your wife and, the other, when you make a mistake in public.

This leaves you with no recourse except to display a nervous smile, which says it all.  A comforting smile to someone who is unwell and receives the warmth gratefully, a complimenting smile for someone who has achieved something. At times, you are forced to smile at a joke without understanding it, in order to respect the sentiments and enthusiasm of narrator.

Several interpretations

When two people of opposite sex exchange smiles at parties, it is open to several interpretations; they are in love; they are flirting; they are jointly smiling at someone who is acting silly; they are envious of some one wearing fashionable attire and expensive jewelry, a smile at someone who is showing-off.  Sometimes a smile confuses an approaching frown.

However a positive and genuine smile can do wonders. A smile is a curve that gets everything straight.  All confusion, animosity, misunderstanding can be overcome just by a single, sincere smile.

If you are not using your smile, you are like a man with a million rupees and no cheque book.

Make friends with a smile. You can friends while traveling; waiting for a delayed flight; checking out of a hotel or walking through shopping malls which leads the way to conversation.  It all ends up with exchange of visiting cards.

Mother Teresa once said, "Peace begins with a smile".
