will be quitting smoking. They feel it very hard to quit smoking, as it
involves both physical and psychological factors. Moreover there is a strong
belief that it is impossible to quit smoking and there are only very rare
cases of quitters. The real statistics will help the smokers to overcome this
false belief and put them on the path towards smoke free life. The real fact
is that every year 1 million Americans quit smoking and almost 50 million
Americans are former smokers.
You would have frequently come across the
idea of quitting smoking whenever you heard about a fatal victim of
smoking. You would have been through discussions, warnings and advices,
but never seem to get around it. As in any case procrastination is the
most dangerous enemy, preventing you from making success in anything you
wish to achieve. It is time to get around to a firm decision to quit
smoking. According to Jenny Duffy, who was a smoker for 13 years and had
written a book and taught seminar on quitting, 'you have to want to
quit-really want to quit-before you can do it'.
Take a firm decision today to start the
process of quitting smoking. There can't be other strong reasons to quit
smoking than the fatal linking smoking has with lung cancer, heart
diseases and emphysema. The smokers should also consider another fact
that their smoking habit creates passive smokers among their family and
others near and around them.
Physical And Psychological Connection
Quitting smoking is a challenging task as
it involves both physical and psychological factors and in other words
it involves both mind and body connection. Nicotine is a cousin of the
dreaded heroin and cocaine, according to the researches. Nicotine in the
cigarette hooks you just as the heroin and cocaine and the withdrawal
symptoms like cravings, anxiety, cramps, nausea, dizziness and
depression are similar.
The smokers feel better and energetic as
nicotine like any other drug surges through the bloodstream and gives
the comfort feeling. But over the period the smokers develop a tolerance
to nicotine and this makes them to go for two and a half packs a day
from a couple of butts a day. The psychological addiction is developed
over the years as they go from a couple of cigarettes a day to 2 to 3
packs a day. They are of strong belief that they can't survive without
cigarettes and they believe that smoking is next only to breathing.
Strong Tips To Quit Smoking
First you should believe that you can quit
smoking. As said earlier, the real fact is that one million Americans
quit smoking every year and you can be one among them, if you take a
strong resolve to quit smoking. Understand that quitting smoking is a
challenge and it is a task to achieve. It is like a challenge faced by
other performers in sports, business etc. Success is not achieved
overnight and you can't expect it to happen in your first attempt
itself. Success is a process and you need to have patience and
perseverance to achieve it. According to Anne Davis M.D, former
president of the American Lung Association, "you should not be
discouraged if you fail in your first attempt. It's more rare to quit on
the first try than on the fifth. Some people have to try as many as ten
to eleven times.

According to Dr.Davis tapering is the method
to total quitting. He says, "tapering is best and reducing your daily puff
doesn't mean that you are weak and don't have will power". Cut down the
number of cigarettes per day. Start your tapering approach by first delaying
the first cigarette. Duffey recommends two hour approach. For the first few
days make two hour gap between your first and second cigarette. You increase
the gap to three two four hours in the next few days and so on. After a
period of four weeks you won't be smoking at all.
