Neck Pain And Preventive Measures

The neck is an important part of our body. Due to our present day work culture one may feel tension in the neck and the adjoining shoulders.  Whenever you feel tension in the neck region release the tension and it is an important part of body awareness. The tension can be released by simple neck stretching exercises.

The vital link

Why neck is so important is that, it consists of seven cervical vertebrae. Among the seven the top most is called the atlas. According to Greek mythology, atlas is holding up the sky, thus separating it from the earth.  In the neck region the top most bone atlas holds up the head, which is a powerful and vast expansive thought processing unit, and connects it to the body which transforms the thought process into action.

Because of this vital connection between thought and action, the neck plays an important role. The whole nervous system from head to other parts of the body passes through neck and the neck protects it. Any structural damage in the neck region due to injury or accident can lead to other complicated problems.

Damage either through physical or emotional accidents can accumulate stress in the neck. The symptoms are dizziness, pain in the neck , pain radiating to the arms, memory loss and partial paralysis.  The accidents may cause tear of muscle or ligament or prolapsed disc . X-ray may fail to detect these damages.

Today's job nature requires long hours of sitting in front of the computer and many don't take care to relieve the stress accumulated in the neck. Neck pain and cervical spondylosis are quite common these days.  Those who are sitting for long hours can take preventive measures through some simple neck stretches.

Neck stretching exercises

Place your hands on the ground and gently lean back. Then move your neck gently to the left and to the right in such a way that your ear should touch the shoulders. Repeat this movement nine times. Then think of the movement your head would make when you say 'yes' and 'No and gently shake your head assuming that you are saying 'yes' and then 'no'.

After doing the above mention stretches, gently stretch your neck to your right. Holding that position breathe in and out slowly. While breathing deeply focus your mind on that region. You can fell the relaxation. Repeat this by stretching your neck to the left.  Then repeat the 'yes' and 'no' action by shaking your head. You can do these neck stretching exercises anytime and even when you are sitting on a chair.

As said above, sitting before the computer for long hours has telling effects on your neck. These simple neck stretches will help you to prevent the neck pain and its related problems.
