Eating Disorder Symptoms And Treatment
The Eating disorder picture has got aggravated in
the modern life style. Many job requirements and competition have
demanded a good looking personality irrespective of gender. The women
are the most affected category because of this high expectation on their
structure. People have become more beauty and healthy conscious. This
drives them into dangerous eating habits which ultimately results in
eating disorders.
The over consciousness about their
health, body weight and shape drives people to put unnecessary
restriction on the amount of food they intake. People with eating
disorder symptoms attach medical and psychological factors to their eating habits
and they are constantly thinking of their health, body and shape.
According the National Association of
Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, about eight million Americans
are having eating disorders symptoms. The female population constitutes the bulk
of the percentage and the 13 to 30 age group forms the 90% of the female
population. Males are not an exemption to the eating disorders and it
affects male and both younger and old. It is highly alarming that the
eating disorder symptom develops even by age twenty. The duration of
eating disorder may last from few months to many years.
No racial group is exempted from this
eating disorders. The prevalence of eating disorder is high in certain
occupations where body weight and shape have more prominence over other
qualifications such as air hostess, modeling, acting and sports. There
are three types of eating disorders, namely Anorexia
Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating

biological and psychological factors contribute to the eating
disorders. According to Laura Weisberg, PhD, director of the eating
disorders program of Westwood Lodge Hospital in Westwood, Massachusetts,
the behaviors and feelings keep reinforcing each other once eating
disorder develops. The eating disorder strikes the vulnerable individual
when he/she passes through a challenging life change or a happening.
Eating Disorders Treatments
First get treated if any medical problem
exists. This follows the psychological treatment to develop healthy ways
of positive thinking and changing the behavioral pattern with food and
relationship with family. A counseling for both the individual and the
family can be arranged. Nutrition counseling is also a must in curing
eating disorders. Regarding medical treatment, anti-depressants are
mostly used.
As in any other disorders, early detection
and treatment is better to cure eating disorders. The extent and speed
of recovery varies with the individual and the mental approach of the
concerned person. Don't feel shy in admitting the eating disorder and
encourage others, whom you suspect of having eating disorders to take to
treatment. Ignoring the eating disorder will lead to serious health
problems in the long run
