Causes Of Seizures

Seizures happen due to some disturbances with the electrical impulses in
the brain. Electrical impulses are keep on fired by the nerve cells. The
disturbance is caused if these electrical impulses sent by the brain are
not received by the cells that are supposed to receive them. Non receipt
of impulses results in energy build up in the brain. This energy buildup
results in loss of consciousness and abnormal movements of certain parts
of the body. The parts of the body that will show abnormal movements are
those controlled by the areas of the brain that undergo the
disturbance.
Illness, other health problems and injury are the common causes of
seizures. Wide range of health problems cause the seizure. Hardening of
the blood vessels supplying blood and oxygen to the brain, anomalies in
arteries and veins, tumors in the brain, hemorrhage or bleeding,
problems related to chromosome, hypertension, ischemia, congenital |
abnormalities and stroke are some of the causes of brain seizure.
Cause of seizure in
Children and Adult depends on the age group
Short term metabolic abnormality or high grade fever may be the cause
for seizure in the age group below two. The metabolic abnormality means
irregular blood levels of sugar, calcium or sodium. The seizure disorder
depends on the abnormality. Usually the brain seizure won't happen
during the resolution of the fever or the abnormality. If it happens
then injury at birth, genetic abnormality in metabolism, other birth
defects or a brain anomaly may be the source of the effect. If it
happens between the age of 2 to 14, in most cases the cause is unknown.

Children due to their playful nature are more exposed to situations
that may cause a head injury. A head injury may show its effects
even after a period of time, if not immediately. Thoroughly check
with a doctor if your child gets a head injury. Stroke, tumor or
head injury may damage the brain resulting in seizure.
Alcoholics should consult their doctor and should not suddenly
withdraw alcohol intake. Sudden alcohol withdrawal is a common cause
of seizure for the early to mid adult age group. For fifty

these age group the cause of seizure in adults is almost unknown. Such
seizures with unknown cause are labeled as idiopathic.
In
most cases, diseases are the common causes of seizures. The diseases may
consist dementia, liver disease, nervous disorder, hereditary related
diseases, failure of kidney and brain infection. The injury that causes
seizure may occur due to many things like accidents, airway obstruction
due to accident, accidents occur while playing sports, injury during
birth, insect stings or animal bites.
Other important conditions that may result in brain seizure symptoms are
brain surgery, use of drugs like cocaine and chemical poisoning. Even
abrupt withdrawal of some medicines may result in seizure.
There are two types of Seizures. They are usually classified into
two categories as provoked and unprovoked ones. Causes of epilepsy
seizures and related disorders fall under unprovoked category. Provoked
seizures are called non epileptic and one best example of this category
is the resulted seizures due to lack of oxygen in the brain. Sleep
deprivation and head injury which may cause post-traumatic epilepsy in
which seizures chronically recur are classified as provoked.
Some treatments like electroconvulsive therapy OR ECT used to treat
depression may result in seizure. Getting sudden shock may also result
in seizure. The best example is unexpectedly witnessing a horrible
accident or a more disturbed event.

Those with previous disorders should be very careful as they have a
greater chance of having one when they experience excess physical or
emotional stress. Don't ignore anything if you have the slightest doubt
of experiencing a seizure disorder. Immediately consult your doctor if
you notice any abnormality in the movement of your body parts and take
thorough medical checkup to look for any seizure symptoms.
